Transform Your Posture,

Transform Your Life

A Tense Relationship with Posture

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy for our posture to take a back seat as stress and anxiety build up, further contributing to poor posture. It can be disheartening to catch a glimpse of ourselves in a window, noticing that slouch or hump that makes us look older and more tired. The word “posture” often evokes a groan, critical self-judgment, and even feelings of futility.

We understand these struggles all too well, and we’re dedicated to helping you find lasting solutions through our posture improvement services.

What causes bad posture?

Physical or emotional pain from injury, trauma, disease, or congenital conditions are the root causes of compensatory posture and movement patterns. Increased muscle tension, holding, and bracing are our bodies’ natural—even necessary!—responses to threatening situations. These do not have to be the “big T” traumas. You tighten up when someone criticizes you, yells, shames, or makes fun of you.

Physical injuries like a broken bone, sprain, or a pulled back, hip, or shoulder unconsciously make you adopt a hunched, folded posture or protectively hold a body part to avoid pain. The protective stance eventually becomes habitual, even though you may no longer need it.

Then there’s our lifestyle. Smartphone and laptop use, combined with long hours of sitting or performing repetitive actions, can literally bend us out of shape. We overuse certain body parts and underuse others, and movement variety is lacking.

The benefits of good posture

From a functional point of view, good posture provides a stable but flexible place to stand, sit, or rest comfortably and then quickly transition into action. Good posture makes you feel potent and robust and offers many benefits, including:

  • Musculoskeletal health
  • Injury healing and prevention
  • Improved mood and confidence
  • Increased lung capacity and energy level
  • Improved digestion

“Two months ago, I was looking for assisted living.  I’m 75 and my lovely apartment is a 4th floor walk up. My knees couldn’t take it. The pain was bad and getting worse, and I was resigned to living with the pain and all the limitations that came with it.  Now, after working with Marek for two months, the pain is completely gone.  I’ve gone from looking for a place to lie down for the duration to looking for new adventures. My mental and emotional outlooks have improved along with my body. I can’t remember when I’ve felt this good.  Feldenkrais is magic and Marek is the top magician.  I’ve worked with some others, and none compare. This is the place to become your best self.”—Mark Milstein
